Discover the Burgundy wine route on this walking holiday, from Dijon to Meursault, staying in comfortable 4* hotels, guesthouses and chateaux. Walk through UNESCO world heritage designated vineyards and peaceful woodland on the ‘Chemin des Grands Crus’; a trail through Côte d’Or wine country passing the famous Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune regions. Day 1 Arrive Dijon

Dijon is easily accessible being on the TGV train line from Paris (journey time approx. 1 hour 40 mins). Although most well known for its mustard of the same name, Dijon is an attractive city definitely worth a visit. Explore the historic medieval centre which was given UNESCO world heritage status in 2015.

Day 2 Transfer to Marsannay-la–Côte and walk to Gevrey-Chambertain 5 miles / 9 km

Start the day with a transfer out of the suburbs of Dijon (duration: 10 min), to the heart of the vineyards. Follow quiet vineyard trails to the village of Couchey and then onto Fixin, a hamlet with a picturesque church, fabulous restaurant and wine tasting ‘cave’. Leaving Fixin, you have the option to take a detour through the woodland of ‘Parc de Nosoit’. Continue through vineyards to reach Gevrey-Chambertin, a small town bursting with wine-tasting opportunities.

Les Deux Chevres | 5 Star | Hotel

A small luxury hotel in Gevry-Chambertain with 5 comfortable rooms. On site wine tasting in the hotel’s cellar are run by a local sommelier (on request upon arrival). There is even an on-site café ’La Fromagerie’ serving organic and artisan cheeses from the Dijon market as well as artisan saucisson to pair with the various wines on offer.

La Rôtisserie du Chambertin | 4 Star | Hotel

La Rotisserie du Chambertin is located in Gevrey-Chambertin at the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. They have 9 rooms, named after vineyard plots. All of them are equiped with a LCD TV and a minibar. Free WiFi access is available. The private bathrooms include a walk-in shower or a bath, hairdryer and free toiletries.

Day 3 Walk to Vosnes-Romanee and wine tour 8 miles / 11 km

A steep but short ascent takes you out of Gevrey and back on the trail. You soon come to Chambolle-Musigny, a hamlet with a few wine shops. Next you'll come across the 16th century Château du Clos de Vougeot. It no longer produces wine, but it is still an important monument to the history of winemaking in the region and will appeal to history, architecture and wine lovers alike.

Once you arrive in Vosne-Romanée, you can head across the street for a lovely private wine tour of the Bernard Rion vineyard, followed by a visit to the winery and its cellar, where you'll enjoy a prestigious tasting of eight wines.

Located on a vineyard on Burgundy's Wine Route, the hotel Le Richebourg offers spacious rooms, fantastic cuisine and the delights of a spa.

Day 4 Walk to Beaune 8 miles / 12 km

A transfer is included this morning to shorten an otherwise very long day. Continue through the vineyards of the Côte de Beaune. You may even see the viticulteurs hard at work pruning the vines in preparation for harvest time in late September. Soon you will arrive at Aloxe-Corton, a beautiful village with its appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), which produces both red and white wines.

Why not visit the Château de Corton-André with its exquisite varnished roof tiles, for a guided tasting? (payable locally)

Day 5 Free Day Beaune

Enjoy a free day to explore the walled town of Beaune. Visit the famous Hotel-Dieu, a former hospital from the medieval period with the most stunning tarnished roof tiles. It now houses a fine arts museum and is Burgundy’s premier attraction. Why not partake in a wine tasting in an ancient cave, simply relax in your hotel, or hop from café to café and watch the world go by.

Day 6 Walk to Meursault 9 miles / 15 km

Escape the hustle and bustle of Beaune almost immediately, and you'll soon find yourself amongst the vineyards again. Passing the town of Pommard, well-known for its rich red wines, there are plenty of opportunities to test them out. A short ascent takes you out of Pommard and back on the trail. Arrive in Meursault and enjoy a drink in the town square before checking into the luxurious Chateau de Citeaux, a short walk from the centre of Meursault, and set in stunning grounds.

La Cueillette | Hotel

This luxury chateau hotel is the perfect way to end your trip in Burgundy. Set in peaceful vineyards yet only a 5-minute walk from the square of Meursault. The Chateau dates from the 19th Century and rooms have been renovated to a modern fashion. There is also a fabulous spa as well as an indoor pool and an outdoor sun terrace.

Day 7 Free day in Meursault or loop walk 4 miles / 7 km

Today there is an option of an easy going loop walk to the neighbouring village of Auxey-Duresses. Alternatively, spend the day at leisure, relaxing by the pool or treat yourself to a treatment in the spa of your Chateau accommodation. Meursault is a sophisticated small town with a few high quality restaurants to choose from, and is a fantastic place to finish your tour!

This tour in France’s Burgundy region is perfect is you want to sample delicious food and wine, while walking at a relaxed pace. The walking is easy-going with ample opportunity to stop for wine tastings along the way. You will be walking on a mixture of paved/unpaved quiet country roads and woodland trails. This trip is graded Easy to Moderate, with daily hikes ranging from 9 km (5 miles) to 15 km (9 miles). Most routes are flat and gentle, with a few short climbs, particularly on Day 3 en route to Nuits-Saint-Georges. These include the ascent out of Gevrey, which is brief and manageable for regular walkers or beginners with a reasonable level of fitness.

This trip includes flexibility with a free day in Beaune on Day 4 to relax or explore at your own pace. On Day 6, the walk to Meursault is optional, offering the chance for a second free day if you'd prefer to rest or spend more time resting.

The walking surfaces vary from quiet tarmac country roads to dirt paths and woodland trails, offering a pleasant mix of terrain throughout the journey.

We will arrange a guided wine tour of the Bernard Rion vineyard followed by a visit to the winery and its cellar. You will sample a selection of 5 wines grown in the area, including the famous Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
