Why we agree with National Geographic&'s top walking routes
The world-renowned National Geographic magazine has come up with their top worldwide hikes – and three of our favourite walking holiday routes have made the list. Let us tell you why we rate these walks so highly.

The West Highland Way, Scotland

The West Highland Way is where our story began at Macs Adventure. We are the leading operator of self-guided walking tours and hiking vacations in Scotland but we still love the West Highland Way. This fabulous route, stretching 95 miles from Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, to Fort William, in the Highlands, is the original of Scotland’s long-distance waymarked walks and offers a treasure trove of fabulous scenery, welcoming pubs and guest houses and a truly rewarding walking adventure. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook for other epic National Geographic highlighted walks that we’ll be adding to our extensive walking holiday programme.

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela, also called the Way of St James

The Way of St James is more than just a walk through fabulous countryside. It’s also a journey of the mind, body and spirit. Millions of pilgrims have walked this route to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain over thousands of years – and you’ll meet many more when you walk this fabulous hike. People are always happy to share their days and tell stories as you walk together. Macs Adventure offer a range of walking routes that can be enjoyed as a holiday. See Camino Tours

Cinque Terre walking tours, Sentiero Azzuro, Italy

There’s even the option to jump on a train between towns if your legs become a little weary. The Blue Trail offers walks of about seven miles between five towns, although you can extend these walks by hiking into the hills. We just love Italy's Ligurian Riviera and the delightful towns and villages. In addition, we have hand picked a host of characterful hotels for our Cinque Terre walking tour holidays.
