Even though I live in a seaside town in Scotland and I am by the sea every day, I headed to the Isle of Wight for my first long-distance coastal walk. Arriving on the Isle of Wight was a wet experience, but then the sun appeared and stayed with us for the rest of our trip. My walk was circular, starting and finishing in Cowes. The culture of Cowes is predominantly boat-based, with a large regatta once a year. We were there as they were setting up for Cowes Week and the town had a great spirit and buzz about it!
Cowes
Doing a coastal path does have its up and downs, and that’s not just the path. The first few days were pretty windy and we were walking into it so it was tough. Further round the island the wind calmed and the weather improved. The coastal path itself is an interesting walk, with such a mixture of terrain! You would think it was all sand and beach paths, but at some points, we were walking through woodland areas. This was equally as interesting and a bit of shade from the sun! The Isle of Wight path is very well way-marked. We did have the guidebook, map and route notes with us. These were only looked at on occasions, to check how far we had walked or how far to go.
Isle of Wight
The views along the path, both in the woodland areas and the sea views, are just stunning! Multi coloured cliffs of whites, pinks and purples from the different corals and heathers. To the yellow and green farmland, the green and orange woodland areas and the crystal clear blue ocean!
The Needles
The walk around the island is a must for the scenery and views! As well as this, the fantastic towns you go through and overnight in are just wonderful. My favourite along the way was Shanklin. With both a touristy promenade and the old town up the hill with some fantastic restaurants, shops and places for a well-earned evening beverage.Â
