Isn't it great how you can see the same landscape in a variety of seasons and have a completely new experience each time. (That experience can change by the hour in Scotland - so if you really want to see four seasons in one day, you know where to go!) Every season brings it's joys, and here we celebrate our team's favourite places around the world for walking holidays in September. We're thinking out of the box...not just "where's got the most sun". The change in season often brings varied conditions - but that just adds to the beauty. So get out there and enjoy walking in the wonderful month of September. Here's our favourite places to do it:
Amalfi Coastal Trails
Almost 60% of Macs Adventure's Amalfi Coast walkers head to the region in September or October. The sparkling coasts and charming towns and villages are a delight at any time of year, but to explore on foot (the best way to get to know the area!), mid summer can be oppressively hot. Milder temperatures make autumn the perfect time to visit, and as the peak tourist season is usually winding up by September, you can beat the tourist crowds and have a more peaceful and often more authentic experience of the local towns and villages. Round off each day’s hiking with a glass of wine on a golden sunset-drenched terrace. Bliss! Browse Amalfi Coast walking ideas and itineraries.
The Camino Frances
Peak season on the Camino Frances, the classic pilgrimage route to Santiago in north-western Spain, is July & August, great for meeting fellow pilgrims. Waiting until September offers the perfect balance of a more peaceful Camino experience, yet still plenty of the wonderful camaraderie. Plus, there's less chance you'll need to contend with the midsummer heat which can make some of the sections a bit of a challenge. Walking the Camino to Santiago is a once in a lifetime experience, and one for every walker's bucket-list. Walking itineraries along the Camino Frances.
Walking in Greece
Walking in Greece is a sublime experience later in the summer (avoiding the peak temperatures of July & August). Enjoy sun-kissed earth, turquoise waters, freshly caught seafood, and encounter ancient history. If you're craving some rays, the sunshine is almost a guarantee, but not quite as sweat-inducing as earlier in the season! Perfect for sun-worshippers, culture vultures, oenophiles, and foodies. There is also a great range of diverse options for walking in Greece, from mainland Greece to the plethora of fabulous islands; Santorini, Corfu, Crete, and Naxos amongst many more. Highland Perthshire
Watch autumn unravel in glorious highland Perthshire. Ok so we confess - the best chance of mild sunny days in Scotland may be earlier in the season, but September often brings some glorious golden sunshine, and the honey and heather colours of the landscape are a joy to behold in any weather. A good waterproof and windproof jacket will have you ready for anything, and invigorating walking amongst the changing foliage will build up an appetite for some fine highland fayre and of course a warming dram. Think cosy highland hotels and warm fireplaces - perfection. Walking in Highland Perthshire.
