A 25-minute transfer will deposit you at the southern terminus of your Appalachian Trail section hike, just north of the community of Dalton. From here, you’ll ascend steadily, so enjoy the warm-up and take in your surroundings. Enveloping the trail are mixed hardwood and hemlock forests, carpeted with wildflowers in spring and later mushrooms, berries, and a verdant understory. Today you’ll pass Gore Pond and later Cheshire Cobbles, a quartzite outcropping with sweeping views of the trail ahead, including the town of Cheshire, Hoosic Lake, and the Greylock massif.
Ascent/Descent: 342m / 397m
Innkeepers Brandi, Billie, and Darrel look forward to welcoming guests, to enjoy their homemade desserts, and hearty, hiker-friendly breakfasts, which are the perfect preparation for the trail. There is no dinner served on the premises, however, the Innkeepers will set up the dining room table and help arrange food delivery. We recommend Vivaldi's Pizzeria and Restaurant, Chee's Chinese Restaurant, and Lee's Dynasty, all of which can be delivered to the Inn at your convenience. As there is no lunch on the trail the following day until your arrival at Bascom Lodge, make sure you have the proper snacks or picnic items for the hike.
Prepare for a climb today by fueling up on a hearty homemade breakfast before departing. The white blazes (marking the entire Appalachian Trail) brazenly invite you to continue northward, despite an unrelenting grade. Take your time, and keep a lookout for wildlife, including black bears, white-tailed deer, red fox, and porcupines.
Once you’ve attained the ridge, about five miles into your hike, the grade lets up as you traverse to the summit of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts at 3,492 feet. Take pride in the accomplishment of summitting under your own power, then explore the attractive meadow, the 93-foot lighthouse-like war memorial, and the charming lodge built from local stone and red spruce. Views into five states can be had on a clear day!
A transfer brings you back to your delightful B&B in Cheshire.

Take a transfer to the top of Mount Greylock to begin a very fitting walk after yesterday's endeavours. It follows the Appalachian Trail, but this time mostly descending from ths state’s climactic peak to the idyllic villages below. After a morning of walking, you’ll begin to see signs of civilization.
Finish your walk at the end of the trail in North Adams. If you are staying close by you can walk to your accommodation, if not, you will meet your transfer her and be taken to your accommodation in Williamstown.

Modern renovations in a classic American motor lodge give this vintage property a nature-infused twist, from the riverside views to seasonally changing menus.
This is an exquisite property located in an elegant 1832 Georgian-style house. There are 5 spacious ensuite guest rooms and they also provide a hearty gourmet breakfast.
Embrace the beauty of the Northern Berkshires as you discover The Williams Inn, an upscale lodging experience located in the heart of Williamstown. Our hotel is surrounded by the art and culture of the Berkshires region and connects visitors to a wide variety of local area attractions.
Home to Williams College, a small liberal arts university, the northwestern-most town in the State is also known as ‘The Village Beautiful’ - and rightly so. Grandiose stone buildings and manicured green lawns stretch outwards from the college campus; a street of vibrant shopfronts fills with students, tourists, and locals alike; and the purple and blue silhouettes of the Berkshire and Taconic ranges stand proudly in the background.
Enjoy a leisurely walk from the town’s bustling Spring Street to bucolic Stone Hill, potentially sidestepping black-and-white cows grazing in the pasture there. Opt for an afternoon at the Clark Art Institute (payable locally), browsing an exhibit of early American oil paintings, or choose to circle back to a lively local eatery for a celebration of your adventures. Many visitors flock to Williamstown for its summer theatre, regional art scene, academic prestige, and recreational opportunities, so you won’t be lacking things to do if you’re sticking around for a few days.

Other Information
Is it for me?This iconic long-distance trail offers opportunities for hikers of all kinds, with the Berkshire Hills in the middle of the spectrum: challenging enough to provide a sense of accomplishment each day, but not as taxing or technical as the northern stretches of the Appalachian Trail. You will need however to be a seasoned hiker with experience of long-distance trail walking. This moderate trip has great walks which are followed by overnights in charming inns and hotels. Try this tour for a taste of AT culture, camaraderie, and beauty, without forgetting that you’re on vacation!
Classic Routes | If you’re the active, outdoorsy type, who’s interested in taking on the great routes of the world or looking for a challenge, then our Classic Routes are for you. We’re talking the West Highland Way, Tour Du Mont Blanc and the Passau to Vienna Danube Cycle Path, to name but a few!
Inn to Inn Walking | Walk from place-to-place changing accommodations each night. Generally staying in B&Bs, inns, and guesthouses.
Solo Travellers
The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years
The hiking on this trip is moderate. The trails on the Appalachian Trail iself are most challenging and particularly your walk on Day 4 up to Mount Greylock with a long ascent and little respite. However you have all day to do it. The following day involves very little ascent and the distance is shorter. The loop walks, both in Lenox and Williamstown are a lot less challenging and involve some sidewalks, paved roads, and dirt single tracks.
The Appalachian Trail is well-established, thoroughly way marked, and highly traveled. However, conditions vary including having to navigate rocks, and tree roots. During heavy rains it may get very muddy. You should be accustomed to hiking for several hours at a time and will enjoy your tour much more if you are well-prepared. Long-distance hiking experience is definitely necessary, as there are not frequent access points and you will need to accomplish the day’s mileage in order to reach your overnight accommodations.
Stay six nights in comfortable accommodations, including classic New England hotels, B&B's and a Scandanavian-style lodging specifically created for walkers. You will recieive a good service and a warm welcome.
Single Rooms & Solo Walkers
This trip is based on two people sharing a room. If you’d like separate rooms, a single supplement is required. If you would like to request a twin room (same room with two separate beds), please notify us during booking so we can request this option; this may not be available in all locations.
If you would like to book this tour as a solo traveler, a solo supplement is required. The Appalachian Trail community is friendly, supportive, and it is common for hikers to undertake an Appalachian Trail adventure solo.
Meals
We will try to book accommodations where breakfasts are included. However we may need to use accommodations which do not provide breakfast. If this is the case we will provide a discount for those mornings when it is not included. When it is not included there will be plenty of places where you may find cafe's where you may purchase it yourself.
The Appalachian Trail is a wilderness trail and there are no restaurants along the route during days 2, 3, and 4 of your itinerary. Please plan accordingly regarding your timing and supplies. Consider picking up picnic provisions (meats, cheeses, bread, fruit, etc.) before leaving Lenox. Information about available food & drink can be found in your route notes.
Dinners are not included; when in Lenox and Williamstown, you will have many excellent restaurants to choose from. On your overnights in Cheshire, you may order out from local options and dine at your inn.
Extra Nights
You may opt to add extras nights during this itinerary as there is plenty more to see, do, and hike. For further details and pricing, please ask us at the time of booking.
Navigating is easy using the Macs Adventure Smartphone App. Your daily walks will be mapped in the app with GPX tracks, route notes, and turn-by-turn directions. All of these resources are available to download for offline use, which is important as cell phone and Wi-Fi service are not reliable for parts of this tour. You will also have 24/7 telephone support from us here at Macs Adventure.
All navigation on the Appalachian Trail itself follows the trail’s white blazes and “AT” markers.

This tour operates anytime from the beginning of June through to October. There are reasons to go to the Berkshires in each season based on your goals. In June, the wildflowers will be in bloom along the trail, and tourist season isn’t quite in full swing so you can expect fewer trail users. High temperatures are in the upper 60s Fahrenheit, with lows in the 40s and 50s. This trip cannot be taken in May due to the fact that there may still be snow on the trails.
The summer months of July and August are lush, green, and often bring brief afternoon thunderstorms (always check the weather forecast before starting your hike and carry appropriate equipment!). Average high temperatures at this time reach the upper 70s, with lows in the upper 50s. September and October see a decrease in summer tourists, but they are quickly replaced by ‘leaf-peepers’, or those who have come to experience the brilliant fall foliage. Temperatures at this time of year are between the 40s and 60s Fahrenheit, with September tending to be a bit drier and crisper than October.
Availability
This trip is available from the first week in June through to the third week in October. We suggest booking as far in advance as possible for a better chance at securing your desired dates. This tour is available to start any day of the week. However, due to minimum stay requirements on some weekends, we may need some flexibility in booking your accommodations.
Due to college events such as commencement and alumni weekend, there is very limited availability on certain spring weekends.
Depending on where you are traveling from, there are several options to get to Lenox.
By Air: The nearest airports are Albany International Airport (1H) and Bradley International Airport(1H15). We would be happy to arrange a private transfer from either directly to your hotel. However this request needs to be made as far in advance of your trip as possible. If last-minute requests are made it's possible that our transfer provider will already be fully booked.
By Bus & Train: Peter Pan and Bonanza Bus lines both service Lenox, though schedules might be limited so we encourage checking your specific dates.
If you are coming from Boston or Boston Logan International Airport, you may elect to take the Amtrak Train's Lake Shore Limited Line to Pittsfield (4H), and then take a short transfer to Lenox.
By Car: You can drive to Lenox by rental car, which you can drop off in Pittsfield (15min from Lenox). If you take your personal car or would like to leave your rental in Lenox for the duration of your trip, please let your Macs Adventure Specialist know so that they can request this with the accommodation (not guarenteed, extra fees may apply). As Lenox is a small town it's also possible to find on street parking, although not in the town centre. Driving times are as follows: Albany, NY - 1H; Hartford, CT - 1H15; Boston, MA - 3H; New York City, NY - 3H30.
There are bus services from Williamstown to major cities with Greyhound and Peter Pan (check schedules).
We would be happy to arrange a private transfer to Albany International Airport (1 hour) or back to Lenox (50 min). There is also bus service to Lenox via the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority. However these requests need to be made as far in advance as possible. Last minute requests cannot always be honoured.
While you are hiking on the Appalachian Trail, your bags will be transported for you so that you can carry a small day pack with only the items you need for the hike. Everything else will be waiting for you when you reach your next accommodation (limited to one bag per person, no greater than 50 lbs).
Trail Donation
Book this trip and a $25 per person donation will be given to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to support the outstanding work that they do to protect the trail.
Our pre-departure information pack includes a detailed equipment list on what to take with you. This includes warm and cold weather gear, hiking boots, rain gear, and lots of other specifics. If you have any questions about what to take, we'd be happy to share our own top tips and advice.
Travel insurance helps protect your travel investment, your belongings and most importantly you, from unforeseen circumstances that may arise before or during your trip. For more information, please visit our travel insurance page by clicking this link.

Positive Impact
At Macs, we don’t do tour buses, groups, or guides. Instead, we give you the freedom and confidence to have your own self-guided walking or cycling adventure.
This is active travel led by you.
You choose your departure date and who you travel with, we do the rest.
We sort accommodation and luggage transfers and provide your route in an easy-to-use app.
We give you everything you need to travel independently but we're here 24/7 if you need us.
Getting from A to B under your own steam is intensely rewarding. With Macs, you'll see the world, and yourself, differently.
